We teach that God gave the Holy Scriptures as the only source of doctrine and the only foundation of faith. To help us understand the teachings of God in Holy Scripture and communicate them to the Church and the world, we write confessions of faith.
The Book of Concord, published in 1580, collects the confessions of faith and the teachings of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther and other leaders of the Reformation. These are the Lutheran Confessions: · The Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds · The Unaltered Augsburg Confession (1530) · The Apology to the Augsburg Confession (1531) · The Smalcald Articles (1537) · The Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope (1537) · Luther’s Small Catechism (1529) · Luther’s Large Catechism (1529) · The Formula of Concord (1577)
We are convinced that these confessions are true expositions of the Word of God and the Christian faith. These confessions unite the congregations of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod by defining the basis of our agreement in doctrine and practice.
